Starting out as an Indie Pop solo project, Deaf Dreamer has transformed into a multifaceted Alternative Rock/Shoegaze band. Originally from the Bay Area, California Deaf Dreamer was influenced by Hip Hop, Punk, and Underground music culture. As the years went by, Deaf Dreamer found themselves immersed in Portland, Oregon's Rock, Psych Rock, and Shoegaze scenes. This has helped cultivate Deaf Dreamer's unique sonic footprint.
At the height of the Bedroom Pop/Vaporwave era (2016-2019), Sebastian Ruiz began releasing music under the moniker Deaf Dreamer. This would mark the start of his multi year process of bringing the project to life and forming a full band. Completely independent and DIY, Ruiz’s early demos gained natural traction across streaming platforms. Deaf Dreamer’s fanbase has continued to grow since gaining more devoted listeners.
Deaf Dreamer's newest release “It’s Better Here Than in The Dark” showcases the group’s DIY rock sound, complemented by strong hooks and syncopated rhythms. The lofi characteristic of the EP is true to the project’s current form. Fully recorded by the band members in the basement of a 100 year old Portland house, “It’s Better Here Than in The Dark” touches on themes of melancholy and existentialism. Released independently on September 22nd, 2023.
